I made 41 final tables in three months! To put this in perspective, I made one final table in the two years before that! I even created a spreadsheet that I used by my tournament window that calculated the Mzone with some inputting on my part. Yes Dan, I agree. Understand the MZone, and you can start winning tournaments - even online!

So upon that good starting premise I tested the "tournament strategy and poker odds calculator" software. True to form, I am impressed with its simplicity and seamless functionality. Now finally, thank you for this, I don't have to calculate the Mzone anymore. Not only that, it calculates the Mzone for my opponents as well

One of the rules of practicing we all hear over and over is "Be certain to drill slowly." (I'm guilty of this too!) Often the result of this is a feeling of inhibition, which takes to tedium. But there is something lacking in the attack so many of us have got taken; we put out to do music, and end up playing what amounts to no more than than a series of barren exercises.

How can we defeat this problem?

Does Reading Make Music?

When you read music you are deciphering the printed page and transferring the information to the keyboard. You might say that you are decoding what the composer or arranger put on the page . The symbols put on the paper by the composer are the only means he or she has to convey his/her musical ideas to the performer, hence to the listener.

But! Is decoding a page of printed music and transferring those symbols to sound really making music?

Not necessarily. That is only one step. We might say that reading the notes with our eyes and playing them with our fingers is putting the mechanics to work. If we stop studying the piece as soon as we are fairly fluent in playing the notes we have read, we may be good keyboard mechanics, but we may not be considered "musicians."

No doubt you have listened to a pianist and come away saying, "That performance really carried me away." On the other hand you have also probably heard much so-called "music" that left you cold—that did nothing for you. Perhaps one reason we enjoy listening to "ear" players is the fact that they are listening to what they play and are not distracted by the printed page.

"Ear" players MUST listen to themselves or they would have no idea of what comes next. The music is really speaking to them. Always remember that until music speaks to the player it cannot communicate anything to the listener.

What has all this got to do with reading music? You ask:"Is it wrong to try to learn to read? Since I can't play by ear, should I just forget about learning to play?"

The first question will take a bit of detail to take us from the printed page to good listening. Don't forget that the performer must be a good listener, if not the most critical of all listeners. If, as you perform, you become so engrossed in the printed notes, their pitch, their time, the touch, the dynamics—that you forget that all those things must fit together as a whole to make a good tone story, then you are a note reader, not a musician. But you must learn to read fluently if you can't play by ear.

There are comparatively few people who can play from memory or by ear everything that is on the page, fully and accurately. But, you don't hear them falter and fumble over the spots that are rough because they have learned how to "fake," how to cover their mistakes so the average listener is not aware of their bloopers.

So go ahead—learn to be a good reader. Not just a good letter reader, be a phrase-wise reader. Be aware of everything printed on the page, but read between the lines. Like a good actor, put yourself in the role and project your feelings to your listeners . Don't let your development stop with just reading pitch and time. Include those little nuances: the delicate shadings of volume, the elasticity of tempo�the phrases that punctuate your musical story. Those are the things that make music from the printed page.

Now you know your answer. It is not wrong to learn to read fluently. Reading, as well as good technique, is a vital part of a musician's craft. And the more automatic your reading and technique become, the easier it will be to learn new music. That, of course, is the one big advantage the fluent reader has over the ear player—the player who reads can learn new music he or she has never heard.

Perhaps your second question is also answered. Of course, you can enjoy music even if you have to dig out every note phrase by phrase. A few hints may help you decide how to choose your music and how to go about learning it. First:

Choose music that is well within your present level of playing so you won't have to work forever on once piece.

Don't worry about challenging yourself.

Don't dub yourself lazy just because you play easy pieces. Who cares what grade level your music is? Just play the melody so beautifully that everyone wants to hum along.

Keep the beat moving smoothly and with the proper accent so everyone will want to tap their toes.

Put in enough subtle changes of volume to make the phrases speak.

Deviate from the established beat just enough to enhance the natural flow of rhythm to make the music come alive.

Down the Stretch - The Preakness

Seventeen horses in the 28 intervening years since have won two of the three races, with 10 taking the Kentucky Derby and Preakness before losing in the longer, 1 1/2-mile Belmont Stakes.

Bernardini, last year's Preakness champ, skipped both the Derby and Belmont, while Derby winner Barbaro broke down at the start of the Preakness and later had to be euthanized.

The usual propositions, matchups and exotics are out there, but bettors shouldn't expect to stuff their pockets with greenbacks off the Preakness -- unless a long shot crashes into the Top 3.

If Street Sense, Hard Spun and Curlin finish one, two, three as they did in the Kentucky Derby on May 5 and with only nine horses expected at the starting gate as opposed to the 20 who raced at Churchill Downs, horseplayers would be lucky to collect a trifecta that paid 10 percent of the $440 that was returned on a winning Run for the Roses tri.

Also, with the trio of favorites all listed at 7/2 or less, a Bodog.com prop that asked if the winning mutuel payoff would be over or under $12.50 appears to be a steal on the under.

One Bodog.com prop that seems to already have been settled is the number of Preakness starters.

Eclipse Award-winning trainer Todd Pletcher's late decision to bring sixth-place Derby finisher Circular Quay back in the Preakness set the field at nine on Wednesday and brought to four the number of Run for the Roses entrants slated to travel the 1 3/16ths-mile distance at Pimlico.

While a scratch remains possible, those who wagered on exactly nine starters at 1/2 seemed likely to cash winning tickets; less than nine was 5/6 and more than nine was 2/1.

Pletcher also has Santa Anita Derby runnerup King of the Roxy entered.

Completing the field were Mint Slewlep, Frederico Tesio Stakes winner Xchanger, CP West and Derby Trial champion Flying First Class.

Street Sense was a 7/5 morning line favorite early Thursday, followed by Hard Spun at 5/2 and Curlin at 7/2.

Bodog.com had the three at 5/4, 5/2 and 7/2 respectively, while Pinnacle's prices were plus $1.56, plus $3.03 and plus $3.52.

BetUs.com's numbers were plus $1.40, plus $2.00 and plus $3.00.

Odds on long shots noticeably differed.

Mint Slewlep, who will break from the No. 1 slot, was plus $100.00 at Pinnacle, 40/1 at Bodog and plus $28.00 at BetUS.

BetUS also offers players the opportunity to wager on which horses will place and show.

Street Sense was minus $3.20 to run second and minus $10.00 to finish third, Hard Spun was minus $1.60 and minus $8.50 and Curlin was plus $1.10 and minus $2.00.

Bettors have at least a pair of time props from which to choose.

A Bodog prop asks whether the winning time will be over or under Bernardini's 1:54.65 clocking of a year ago.

BetUS asks if it will be over or under 115 seconds (1:55.00).

VIP.com lists a wide range of margin of victory props, ranging from a dead heat at 50/1 to the favored 1 to 2 3/4 lengths at 7/2.

Bodog asks simply if the margin of victory will be more or less than two lengths.

More than two lengths was a 2/3 choice, two lengths was 3/1 and less than two lengths was 5/6.

Saturday's Pimlico attendance was the focus of another Bodog.com proposition.

"Yes," turnout will exceed 117,000 and "No," it won't were both minus $1.20.

VIP.com asks directly if Street Sense will win the Preakness and Triple Crown.

"Yes" on the Preakness was minus $1.40 and "No" was minus $1.70.

"Yes" on the Triple Crown was plus $3.00 and "No" was minus $4.00.

Pinnacle posted a full roster of matchups, including one that had Street Sense at minus $1.17 versus both Hard Spun and Curlin at minus $1.01.

And now Philip Hughes, their bonus baby wunderkind who can't miss, gets called up to fill in for the decimated rotation, pitches over six innings of no-hit ball against Texas, and then pulls a hamstring. This rookie literally had to leave a no-hitter because he hurt himself, and now will miss more than a month with his own bad hammy.

Don't get me wrong: this is still an unbelievably fearsome lineup, the best in baseball. They're going to score an ungodly number of runs. But will the team be able to get anyone out? Do they really think this ragtag band of 80-year-olds and 25-year-olds with 80-year-old body parts is going to make it through a full year, or that the six-inning maestro Roger Clemens is going to cure all that ails them? The Hughes injury is especially brutal because this kid was the embodiment of hope. I know he'll be back at the All-Star Break at the latest, and that in the long term having the temptation of pitching Hughes all year removed is probably the best thing for the kid. But still, he's a walking metaphor.

Listen, New York won't finish last. I'm just no longer 100% convinced they're finishing first, either.

Moss plays better when his team is winning, which is a catch-22 because his recent teams couldn't win unless he was playing well. This is the perfect situation for him to come back at re-establish himself as the league's best WR. It's unlikely that Belichick and Brady will take any sulking from Moss, and I predict we will see a Cory-Dillon-like turnaround in Moss's attitude, where Randy just comes to work and puts up big numbers. The change is already apparent, with Moss agreeing to renegotiate his contract to come to the Patriots. Hey, Tom Brady was one drive away from the Super Bowl last year and he did it without a 1,000-yard receiver. The Pats have bolstered their receiving crew to the point where Brady could and should have multiple 1,000-yarders in the 2007 season.

The first Saturday in May is approaching. Can you give us a quick rundown of your personal favorites for the Kentucky Derby?

BDB, BoDog.com: My personal favorite is Street Sense. I think this is the year where history is made with Street Sense winning both the Breeders Cup Juvenile back in November and the Kentucky Derby on May 5th. Although he came in second in the Blue Grass Stakes, this horse is worth his Eclipse Award. Curlin, most likely to go off as the post time favorite, is also among my top picks. He's the only horse who's currently unbeaten, but with only three lifetime starts, and no two-year-old races under his belt, I'm not totally convinced this horse can win the big race. I think Nobiz Like Shobiz has a chance if he can keep his cool. Although he had new equipment his last prep, he was able to pull out the win.

The Bulls sweeping the Heat out of the playoffs certainly caught me by surprise. Do you think Chicago is a better-than-even bet now to make it to the NBA Finals? How would they fare against the Pistons?

BDB, BoDog.com: The sweep was definitely unexpected, but the Bulls taking the series wasn't a huge surprise to me. Wade was less than extraordinary after returning from his shoulder injury. The Bulls are a good team and with their combination of shooters, Ben Wallace playing well inside and Luol Deng's coming-out party this year, they stand a better chance of beating the Pistons than their Eastern Conference counterparts. Coach Skiles has his team playing their best, and as a result they're definitely a good pick to come out of the East.

Save Your Child Before It Is Too Late - The Butterfly Rule

Most of us carry childhood traumas made acute with the rise in child psychology. This has resulted in us trying to become the friends of our children, but not just that. We try to do everything for them under the excuse that our parents did not do these things for us. But is this the right way to bring up our children.

What is the Butterfly System?

Fact:


Most know that the butterfly is a transformation of a caterpillar which itself comes from an egg. But, did you know that for the caterpillar to become a butterfly it has to form a cocoon. When it turns into a butterfly, it has to struggle to open the cocoon, and it takes them hours to manage to break that open. Once they do, they emerge, spread their wings and fly off.

Hypothesis:


If you try and cut open the cocoon to help the butterfly emerge, you will destroy it. It will be too weak to fly. So, even if you put it in front of you and even if its in your power to cut the cocoon open, you won't because you are thinking about the best interests of the butterfly.

Lesson:


Just like you would leave the butterfly trapped inside the cocoon, you have to learn how to let your children fight through life by themselves. Yes, at first, they will not succeed, and may even fail badly. You will want to help them. You might even know how to help them. But, please, do not!

The Toughest Part:


The lesson is easily understood, but it is very difficult to start acting like that. We, as parents, have to realize that our duty is not to have fun with them or to ensure that they succeed, but to guide them so that they learn how to succeed.

Lessons for the Future:


We have to start goading our kids to success. Yes, we all love it when our kids do well, but its more important that they learn how to succeed even if that means that they fail again and again. Sometimes, the kids do well. That is great, but again, we have to watch how they do it. If they cheat, its our duty to guide them.

This might seem trivial, but how many times have you helped your child do his or her homework or class project just so that they will get a good grade. Is that what parenting is all about? Good grades and tons of awards in the closet? No!

In The Spin Of A Wheel - A Beginner's Guide To Roulette

When you think about Roulette, you might think of James Bond placing bets according to decisions of a beautiful woman who's 'lucky'. But can it really be that random? And is it as easy to play online as it is in casino in Monte Carlo?

The word Roulette means 'small wheel' in French. The outcome of each round of Roulette is indeed decided by the ball landing in one of 38 holes (American version), which are positioned around the edge of this wheel. These holes are numbered 1 to 36, with a 0 at one end and a 00 at the other. The basic betting consists of placing any number of chips against one of these numbers. If it lands on your number, you win 35 chips for every chip you have bet (called 35:1 payout).

Chances Are…


It is important to note that there is the same 1-in-38 chance at each spin of the wheel – the chances of the ball landing in a given hole are not increased by it not having landed there all evening. That is known as the 'gambler's fallacy' and is a common though understandable error that people make when playing games of chance, such as dice games. 'I haven't had a six for twenty rolls so there must be one coming up…' Wrong: the dice doesn't 'know' what happened over the last twenty rolls – so it can't affect what happens this roll. Same with the Roulette wheel.

Placing Bets in Roulette


It follows that placing your bets is not an exercise in anticipating what may come up. The spread of your bets across the table is like a net, sitting there waiting to capture one of the numbers when it comes up. It would therefore be a perfectly respectable strategy to leave your bets on the same numbers for every spin of the wheel, and wait to see how often those numbers come up. For this reason, many experienced players have their own sets of 'lucky' or preferred numbers, which they largely stick to with some variation.

If the betting simply consisted of individual numbers, it would be that simple. But there are also various other outcomes you can bet on, which are more probable than a single number coming up – but carry correspondingly lower winnings.

The simplest options carry a better chance and therefore 1:1 payout – meaning you get one chip back for each one bet. These are to bet on one of the two colors the numbers are divided into, which are red or black; to bet on an odd or even number coming up; or to bet on a number in either the upper or lower half (1-18 or 19-36). Below the grid of numbers on the Roulette table, there are areas of the table that represent these options.

Above these sections, there are areas where you can bet on the lower, middle or upper third of the number range coming up. Because there are 36 numbers in total, these are called the first twelve (1-12), second twelve (13-24) and third twelve (25-36). These areas of the board carry 2:1 payouts, meaning you get two chips back for every one you bet. It is also possible to achieve 2:1 payouts by betting one of the three columns in which the numbers are organized on the table. You do this by placing your bet in a space at the end of the row you have chosen.

That, unfortunately, is the end of the simple part. From now on, it gets more complicated.

The remaining ways of betting are by selecting combinations of numbers. You divide the single-number payout by the number of numbers in your combination. If you recall the payouts for one number are 35:1, then the payouts for a two-number combination will be 17:1, for three numbers 11:1, for four numbers 8:1, or 6:1 for five numbers.

Due to the configuration of the roulette table, you cannot bet on any combination of numbers. They have to be adjacent for a two number bet, in which case your chips are placed straddling the two numbers; in a row across the table for a three number bet, in which case your chips are placed at the end of the row; in a square for a four number bet, in which case your chips are placed in the centre of the square. A five number bet has to involve either the 0 or the 00. It is a bet than 00, 0, 1, 2 or 3 will come up and is wagered by placing your chips at the end of the line dividing 0 and 00 from the squares marked 1, 2 and 3.

Online Roulette
